Tephrosia maxima Botanical Description

Prostrate herb; stem often purplish, pubescent. Leaves imparipinnate, 4-13 cm long; leaflet 9-17, 1-2.4 x 0.5-1 cm, oblanceolate or obovate-oblong, base acute to cuneate, apex obtuse or truncate, apiculate, glabrous above, appressed-pubescent beneath, thin-coriaceous; stipules 4-7 x 2-4 mm, lanceolate, acuminate. Inflorescence racemose, axillary or pseudoterminal, to 14 cm long, few-flowered. Flowers 1.4-1.7 cm long; pedicels 2-3 mm long; bracts 4-5 x 1-1.5 mm, ovate to lanceolate, acuminate. Calyx-tube 2-3 mm long, campanulate, pubescent; lobes unequal, 3-6 mm long, lanceolate, appressed-pubescent. Corolla rose to pinkish white; standard 1.5-1.7 x 1-1.3 cm, obovate; wings 1-1.2 x 0.4-0.6 cm, obovate; keels 1.3-1.5 x 0.4-0.6 cm, oblong, falcate. Staminal sheath 1-1.4 cm long. Ovary 1-1.2 cm long, linear, compressed, hirsute; style 5-6 mm long, hirsute. Pods 4-6.5 x 0.4-0.6 cm, linear, slightly curved upward toward the apex. Seeds 3-4 mm long, orbicular, dark-brown.
